The season of our new play, The Cave Above The Pa, Te Ana I Runga I Te Pa which traces the history of the land in Mawhera/Greymouth and its impact on race relations has attracted a large and enthusiastic audience. The discussions with the audience after each show, hosted by a local dignitary, have begun to produce a new vision for the town, based on a progressive culture encompassing both the treaty and environmental sustainability and the need to establish ongoing dialogue with Maori – the latter being a complex task as it involves dialogue with two runanga, Mawhera Corporation and Maori from other iwi living in the town.

The production illustrates for us the positive role Community-based theatre can play.
